Lead Instructor

We're looking for a self-motivated Lead Instructor to help us expand tech greatness in the Columbia or Jefferson City area. This will be a 6-month contract position, with a compensation range from $30K - $34K.

For the past several years, LaunchCode has run a pilot program offering tech education programs to incarcerated individuals within the Missouri Department of Corrections.

With the support of the Ascendium Foundation, we are expanding this program to offer LC101 & Liftoff programs at the Algoa Correctional Center in Jefferson City, MO, specifically targeting students within 2 years of release, as a pathway to successful re-entry. We are seeking a motivated individual to help lead crucial portions of instruction for this initiative.

LaunchCode's JusTech Program:

Research has shown that access to employment is a key factor in reducing recidivism for people returning from incarceration, yet the barriers to upwardly mobile careers for justice-involved job seekers are incredibly high.

We're looking for a self-motivated instructional lead to help us tackle these barriers head-on, by expanding and executing our portfolio of intensive courses within Missouri Department of Corrections facilities.

LaunchCode's LC101 course is an educational experience for those wanting to get started with a career in programming. The core course curriculum is managed by LaunchCode and will be adapted and delivered by the Lead Instructor. The curriculum consists of coding and web fundamentals in JavaScript, with additional job-ready skills taught in Java. The Liftoff program is a follow-on course that focuses on capstone project development job readiness, building on the skills taught in LC101.

The Lead Instructor will be responsible for executing curriculum, instructing students, and assisting students through the coursework with the help of teaching assistants, and volunteers.

In-prison courses are run in an offline environment that simulates the internet. The Lead Instructor will work with JusTech's Director of Instruction to use this platform to best serve students.

This is a 6-month contract role with a targeted start date of April 2022, with opportunities to extend engagement.


  • Teaching programming and related technical topics at the college level or equivalent
  • 3+ years software and/or web development in a professional setting, with an emphasis on Javascript & Java.
  • A solid knowledge on current programming trends and best practices
  • Building and deploying software applications from scratch

The JusTech Lead Instructor should possess:

  • A passion for working with driven justice-involved individuals to help them build towards career & personal success
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • A strong, outcome-oriented work ethic
  • Empathy for learners who are working hard to learn new skills
  • An ability to thrive as an effective team member in high-intensity environments

This will be a contract position. The compensation range is between $30,000 to $34,000.
